چکیده

The teratogenic effect of thalidomide (Th) is well-known. Current theories about the mechanism of action of this effect have been well summarized by Woollam (21), There is controversy about the possible immunosuppressive action of this compound (1 , 2,4,5, 10) and its influence on chromosome aberrations (9. 14. 15). It seems clear, however, that the drug does not have an all-inclusive "blanket" effect over immune responses. Thalidomide is very active, sometimes dramatically so, on signs and symptoms of reactional lepromatous leprosy (3). It does not have, however, any direct effect over Mycobacterium leprae and cannot be considered as an anti-leprosy drug (16). Reactional lepromatous leprosy has many clinical and histologic features of hypersensitivity reactions as has been stressed recently (20). We decided to explore the possibility of a suppressive effect of this drug over autoimmune experimental diseases, in which delayed hypersensitivity is all important, and where tissue components and mycobacteria have to be administered together as they occur, for instance, in lepromatous neuritis. In a first series of experiments, experimental allergic encephalomyelitis ( EAE ) and experimental allergic neuritis (EAN)

Effect of Honey Bee Venom on Lewis Rats with Experimental Allergic Encephalomyelitis, a Model for Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a progressive and autoimmune neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system (CNS). This disease is recognized through symptoms like inflammation, demyelination and the destruction of neurological actions. Experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) is a widely accepted animal model for MS. EAE is created in animals by injecting the tissue of myelin basic...

MAKING AN EXPERIMENTAL ANIMAL MODEL FOR MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

To understand the mechanism of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune demyelinating disease, the researchers developed an experimental animal model for MS, which is called EAE (Experimental Allergic Encephalomyelitis). There are several methods for inducing this animal model. In this research the active EAE, which is developed by injecting bovine myelin antigens into genetically susceptibl...

Sequence of tissue responses in the early stages of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE): immunohistochemical, light microscopic, and ultrastructural observations in the spinal cord.

Experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) was induced in adult Lewis rats with purified guinea pig CNS myelin and Freund's adjuvant. As soon as the very earliest clinical signs appeared the animals were perfused with fixatives and the spinal cord analyzed by electron microscopy, silver methods, and immunocytochemistry. Our findings suggest that in the early stages of EAE a sequence of event...

Experimental allergic neuritis: a new experimental approach.

The technique of macrophage migration, as a specific measure of delayed or cellular hypersensitivity, was applied to the guinea-pig model of experimental allergic neuritis (EAN) to explore the relevance of hypersensitivity to peripheral and central nervous system antigens. Results indicate that in EAN there is hypersensitivity to central as well as peripheral nervous tissue antigens. In contras...
